Many think that the first Ford Ranger was a pickup but the truth is that it was actually a carry-all truck which is now known as an SUV. To make it more interesting, it was not even an original Ford model. It was panel truck built by Ford that was converted by 2 independent companies into a 4-wheel drive passenger truck. This featured 1951 Ford F1 Ranger Marmon Harrington is an example of the first Ranger and has been completely restored to its factory spec condition. This all-terrain vehicle from Scotts Valley, California looks excellent.
In 1949, Ford wanted to have a new four-wheel drive model but they were entirely inexperienced with the concept at that time. So they asked the experts, Marmon Harrington, to help them design these rare four-wheel drive classics. The Ford F1 Rangers started out as a standard Ford delivery truck and was sent to the Marmon Harrington facility. Seibert Co. rebuilt the stock Ford body and Marmon Harrington turned the drivetrain into a 4×4 powerhouse.
Built from 1949 to 1952, only 52 Ford F1 Rangers Marmon Harrington were to have existed and only 11 of those are believed to still exist. This Ranger is 1 out of 2 to have been restored to its factory condition which makes it a very rare example of the first Ford Ranger.
In 2009, the owner of this Ranger had it restored by J&L Fabricating from Puyallup, Washington, and a lot of money to turn this classic into a beautiful and original show car. It is powered by its original 239 ci flathead V8 that could produce 85 horsepower. The flathead is connected to its original 4-speed manual transmission. The glossy blue finish was done by Byers Custom from Auburn, Washington. To be as accurate as possible, they used the Ford Sheridan Blue finish which took more than 400 man hours to complete.
It also has all of the original modifications done by Marmon Harrington. Every detail of this Ranger has been accurately restored to perfection. This truck’s rarity and excellent quality have earned a special space in Ford F1’s booth during the 2015 America’s Car Museum. During the 2015 Pacific Northwest Concours d’Elegance, it earned a 2nd place for the Working Guys group.
This four-wheel drive 1951 Ford F1 Ranger Marmon Harrington is probably the father of all Ford SUVs today. A significant vehicle to Fords long history of success.
